Farming/Agriculture Volunteer Program in Ghana

Program Description

Volunteer in a sustainable agriculture in rural communities in Ghana and have a unique and meaningful opportunity to learn, gain experience and help enhance and improve farming practices and techniques.
In addition to participating agriculture related activities, volunteers and interns may also assist in community outreach efforts, which involves educating families on ways to optimize small farmlands.

Volunteers will be working with local farmers and community leaders and will gain hands-on- experiences with local techniques, while also sharing their own experiences and valuable input from their own experiences. The community outreach work will also support the local schools, that our volunteers work in, educating schools on how to plant and grow food crops to feed their students, and teaching both teachers and students about sustainable agriculture techniques that they can take home and share with their families.

Volunteer tasks include:

1. Raising seedlings
2. ⁠Weeding/Land clearing and preparations
3. ⁠Pest and disease control
4. ⁠Watering 5. ⁠Gardening/Fencing
6. ⁠Fertilizer application etc.

The work volunteers participate will vary seasonally and will depend on the work already underway at the time you join the program.

As a farming volunteer in Ghana, you will be adding value to the local community while also developing personally and professionally by:

1. Helping with farm work outdoors
2. ⁠Gaining farming techniques
3. ⁠Immersing yourself in Ghanaian culture
4. ⁠Developing your communication and practical skills
5. ⁠Discover Africa’s incredible slave trade dungeons.

Please Note: Work on the Agriculture/farming project usually stops during the hottest period of the day and during this time volunteers will assist with teaching in local schools to ensure they have sufficient volunteer work. Also, resources and machinery for this program are extremely limited on this project and most work is very labour intensive.

Volunteers should bring gloves, flashlight, and light weight scarf for sun protection or hat, insect repellent, working boots, water bottle, lunch bag etc. (all can be purchased locally in Ghana).

Typical day

Work and hours depend on the project and placement that each volunteer is involved.

A typical day would be as follows: 7:00am-7:30am Breakfast at the volunteer house
8:00am volunteers leave home for their placement.

12:00pm-1:00pm Volunteers at the placement usually ends.

Volunteers are free to go home for lunch at their accommodation, prepare for the next day or do some shopping and sightseeing. 5:00pm-6:00pm Volunteers have dinner at the volunteer accommodation with other volunteers.

Qualifications

No qualifications are required for this program. Volunteers must be fluent or nearly fluent in English to communicate with the locals.
