Middlebury School in Italy: Rome

Program Description

The Middlebury School in Italy offers an exceptional academic program to undergraduates at U.S. colleges and universities. Students who have completed 4-5 semesters of Italian training are invited to participate in the program under the Middlebury Language Pledge®, a commitment to speak exclusively the target language for the duration of their time abroad. Our goal is to provide an enriching academic experience and to give students the best chance of actively engaging in their new environment. Linguistic development and cultural understanding are at the core of the Middlebury Schools Abroad, and students have many opportunities for immersion, from coursework entirely in Italian to housing with local families; from internships and volunteer work to activities among the student body of our host institution.

Rome offers the bustling energy of a metropolitan city, as well as all the history and ancient monuments that it is renowned for around the world. La Sapienza, the university where students take their courses, was founded in 1303 and is considered one of the most prestigious in Italy. Although the charm of the city draws in many international students and tourists, the students on the Middlebury program set themselves apart by their dedication to language study and desire to understand the real Rome of today.
