Middlebury School in Italy: Florence

Program Description

Students on the Middlebury School in Italy set themselves apart from many of the international students and tourists who come through the city: they speak the language, and they strive to come away with an experience that reflects real life Florence. Florence is incredibly rich in history and in cultural opportunities, and famous all over the world for its art, history and beauty. Students are strongly encouraged to take full advantage of the museums, galleries, theaters, music, lectures, and the many exhibitions that are offered each year.

The program in Florence has three tracks of study, a Beginner level, an Intermediate Level, and an Advanced level. Students at the Beginner and Intermediate levels take courses in Italian language and area studies at the Middlebury Sede in the center of the city. Students at the Advanced level take courses at the Università degli Studi di Firenze or l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze and may take on an internship for credit. Seminars accompany all courses for additional support.

Linguistic development and cultural understanding are at the core of the Middlebury Schools Abroad, and students have many opportunities for immersion, from coursework entirely in Italian to housing with local families; from internships and volunteer work to activities among the student body of our host institutions.
