Dance in Paris

Program Description

One of the most fascinating places in the world to study dance history and technique is Paris. Filled with collaborative history between visual and dance artists, Paris also exhibits the impact of American dance artists who thrived and lived in the city. Dance enthusiasts will be immersed in a comprehensive study program that combines classes on techniques in a variety of conservatories and dance académies with a class on special topics that relate to these four aspects of the history of dance:

1) 17th-century ballet history and the development of the Paris Opéra Ballet
2) The Impressionists with emphasis on artists inspired by dancers
3) The Diaghilev period (1909-1929) and select collaborators
4) American artists Isadora Duncan and Josephine Baker, who greatly influenced 20th-century dance history and lived in Paris for extended periods of time

Explore the roles of dance in the history of Paris through student-designed walking tours that are self-guided and visits to important cultural sites.
