Athena Study Abroad in Kyoto, Japan

Program Description

Athena's program in Kyoto, Japan exposes students to the center of Japanese culture and its variety. Kyoto is not only a thriving metropolis, but is also dotted by parks and surrounded by a picturesque countryside, with temples intermixed in both areas. This session takes place at a special time of the year as it aligns with the Gion Festival and Yoiyama stall nights. The cultural class offered during this summer session will expose students to the history and modernity of the region while the photography class gives them the means to take home skilled portrayals of their amazing experiences.

Program highlights

Most of the classes take students to important historical and cultural sites in and surrounding Kyoto so that students will have first hand experience with what they are learning about. Such sites may include a traditional tea ceremony, kabuki theater, the Golden Pavilion, Zen temples and gardens, the Path of the Philosopher, Arashiyama Bamboo forest, and a feudal castle.
