2018 Dig in the Roman City of Sanisera

Program Description

Sanisera is an Ancient Roman city and is situated in Menorca, an island in the Mediterranean. Students will engage in actual archaeological fieldwork through this program.

Sanisera was a Roman port that was highly connected with maritime activities and traffic in the Mediterranean. Students will focus on the excavation of this site and attempt to understand more about this fascinating dig for illuminating artifacts that shed light on history of Sanisera.

Students will be able to train and gain valuable experience through working on this site. Sanisera is an established excavation project with the necessary archaeological documentation for students involved in excavating this II century B.C. to VI A.D. Roman civilization.

- Use the Harris Method to record data obtained during excavation
-Train how to recognize different types of Roman finds and archaeological materials from II century B.C. to VI A.D.

In the Laboratory
- Learn how to classify Roman archaeological objects including metals, glass, faunal remains, numismatics, and ceramics.
-Learn dating techniques that are based on classifying archaeological objects found through the stratigraphic sequence.
