Program Description
In Sri Lanka, many young people like sports. Other than those who are in wealthy schools, many children do not have the opportunity to learn different types of sports or have access to a sports coach. Volunteers who are sporty will have the opportunity to work closely with one or more of the schools or sports clubs in the Colombo District by coaching sports to children. This type of project is available all around Sri Lanka as children in each district are very keen in to learn sports. It will also be an enriching experience to work with young people who have the talent, but not necessarily the opportunity to be trained. Many of these children are not trained because they have no sports club near by or money to travel to faraway places to get proper training. The activities that a volunteer can coach will be: Netball, Football, Cricket, Hockey, Basketball, Swimming, Rugby, Badminton, Golf, and even Karate or Judo. Volunteers will be able to work as sports coach in homes run by the Department of Probation and Child Care Services (Children’s Homes) or in other private sports clubs, institutions, schools etc.
