Cricket Coaching Volunteer Project in St Lucia

While coaching you will find yourself leading after school cricket sessions for local kids. Our goal is to make the sport available to everyone on the island, for this we need your help as well. Cricket coaches on the island are few and far between, as a volunteer you will have an excellent opportunity to work with local kids, all the while gaining valuable experience and helping establish and build the local clubs.

The poorest regions of St Lucia need the most help. You will be a cricket coach on the island and work closely with the local clubs, along side local charity organizations, to help promote the sport and bring some happiest to those that need it most.

The top club on the island is Laborie CC, they staff some of the islands most experienced coaches and top players. You will have the unique opportunity to work closely with the club, assisting the local coaches with coaching sessions, and helping with preparation for, and during, matches at the weekend. You will have the chance to get behind the scenes at Beausejour Stadium, a West Indies hotspot, where the Laborie CC are privileged enough to be invited to play.

You can expect a varied role as a cricket coach in St. Lucia, you will have the chance to gain unique insight into life inside a West Indies cricket club as well as have the chance to work with the lively and enthusiastic kids at the local schools and in the community coaching clinics. Cricket is a well established sport on the island, therefore many of the children in the local schools and communities have good basic skills and the hand-eye coordination required to develop into future cricket stars.

While you are a coach on the island you can expect to run drills and conditioned games to help improve technique and comprehension of the rules and and how the game itself is played. Bowling, batting and fielding are just some of the skills you will introduce as the kids develop with you.

Working closely with more experienced cricketers at Laborie CC, who will already have a good understanding of technique, rules and in-game tactics, your coaching sessions will be more adventurous. You will work on important game-play topics such as positioning, finer techniques and decision making. Your role will be to help prepare the team for competitive weekend matches and competitions.

Sacred Sports charity, in conjunction with with summer camps in St Lucia, run throughout July and August. These camps attract over 300 children across the island and are free for children aged 5 – 18yrs, offering a range of different sports. Volunteer sports coaches are required for cricket, football, netball and rugby. The aim is to get children off the streets and doing something positive with their long holidays off school.

It is advised that participants complete a CRB/ DBS (Criminal Records Bureau) check in order to take part in this project. Sporting Opportunities can provide this service for you at an additional cost of £30.

St Lucia is abundant with sporting talent, and as a cricket coaching volunteer on your gap year or career break, you will have the amazing opportunity to play a key role in the development of the sport from the grass roots up to club level competition, all in a stunning Caribbean island setting!

We consider this to be a grass roots project. There is a varied aspect to the project that will see you working with youth cricket in schools and communities and also help coach one of the islands top club sides. You will have the chance to use your knowledge of cricket to help develop the game across the Caribbean island of St Lucia.
