China - Giant Panda Center

Program Description

Work among the luscious forests of China while observing and learning about giant pandas. The survival of giant pandas has been threatened in the past, making them a protected and preserved species among the Chinese people. The Center has been around for over 20 years helping the panda population grow. Some of your responsibilities may include preparing food, chopping and carrying bamboo, and observation and research of the pandas at the center. The reserve is broken into six sections: panda raising and breeding area, scientific study area, food preparation and animal hospital, staff quarters, bamboo base, and tourist accommodations. Volunteers will shadow a trainer and assist the trainer in caring for the pandas.

Program highlights

1. Immerse yourself in the Chinese culture and learn about their traditions and rituals.
2. Observe, learn, and interact with the giant pandas living at the center.
3. Participate in a one-week program to learn the proper care and maintenance of the pandas.
4. Before or after the program travel to local hot springs, hike Mount Qingcheng, or explore the city of Ya’an for shopping and sightseeing.
