Summer Program: Culture & Ecology of Northern Thailand

Program Description

This 6-week summer program examines the intersection of vibrant cultures and ecology in beautiful Northern Thailand, and gives students an insider's perspective as they learns experientially in the expedition field. During this unforgettable experience, students will live with host families in a variety of villages, conduct field studies, hike into and survey remote forests, meet with local NGOS, and learn from a series of guest speakers. Students will also have the opportunity to learn basic proficiency in Thai language, and challenge themselves academically and physically.

By the end of the program students will have an understanding of the key sustainability issues and development challenges in Thailand, and a more in-depth understanding of sustainable development principles worldwide.

Program highlights

On this program, students will:
1. Learn hands-on in the expedition field
2. Live with host-families and engage with community leaders in multiple villages
3. Study management of indigenous forests with ethnic Karen people while backpacking on remote forest trails
4. Work on an organic farms while learning about agroecosystems
5. Develop expedition and leadership skills
6. Gain basic language proficiency in the Thai language
