Iceland Winter, Renewable Energy & Extreme Climate, 8-Day

Program Description

Be a part of a diverse cohort of international students from a variety of backgrounds and subjects to create a final project exploring the applicability of an initiative for social impact. This course is accredited for 3 ECTs or 1.5 transferable academic credits through the Reykjavik University’s Iceland School of Energy. This is an opportunity to learn about the innovative Icelandic advances in renewable energy as you are immersed in Nordic culture while going on thrilling excursions to some of the most surreal destinations on our planet. Facilities dealing with Wind, Biofuel, Geothermal, and High and Low Pressure Hydroelectric will be open to you. Learn about the environmental, business, and political factors that affect Iceland.

This project is optimal for adventurers who are prepared for the extreme climate of winter in Iceland.

Program highlights

Day 1:
-Welcome to Iceland! Airport pickups
-Capstone Project launch
-Guesthouse check-in
-Team intros & welcome
-Visit the Reykjanes Peninsula

Day 2:
-Capstone Project development
-Mountain hike & natural hot springs
-Experience GeoTown
-Geothermal Class
-Hydroelectric class
-Reykjavik University energy efficiency tour
-Intro to energy class

Day 3:
-Icelandic pool & spa culture
-Caving
-Tour one of Iceland’s largest geothermal power plants
-Gain industry access inside Iceland’s oldest hydroelectric power plant
-Capstone development
-Energy economics class

Day 4:
-Bonfire
-Arrive in highlands for overnight camping
-Highland adventures
-Super jeeps to highlands
-Visit Iceland’s famous Golden Circle - Gulfoss and Geysir
-Visit Iceland’s wind power experiment
-Visit one of Iceland’s newest hydroelectric power plants

Day 5:
-Capstone development
-Depart from highlands
-Glacier hike
-New hotel check-in
-Super jeep adventures
-Biofuel class at the base of the famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano
-Volcano documentary & local farm tour
-Biofuel tour
-Visit a residential hydroelectric power plant at a local farm

Day 6:
-Finalize Capstone Projects with team
-Capstone Project presentations at Reykjavik University

Day 7:
-Black beach adventure
-Glacier hike
-Waterfall exploration

Day 8:
-Explore Reykjavik city
-Airport drop offs & departures
