About Children of Fire

Industry:
Type:
Children of Fire is Africa first burns charity based in Johannesburg South Africa. The charity helps burn child survivors from all over Africa access re-constructive and rehabilitative surgery for injuries caused by burns. Children of Fire was established in 1996 (registered 1998 and 1999) after founder and current director Bronwen Jones realised there was a desperate need for an organisation that could assist young South African burn survivors. Bronwen had read an article about a six-month-old little girl who had been burned in a shack fire and abandoned in hospital; she had been turned away from three other hospitals because they did not believe she would survive. In the severity of the fire, she lost her eyelids, nose, lips, hands, and parts of her body were seriously scarred. When doctors planned to take Dorah’s eyes out because the dressings were too expensive, Bronwen fought to save them. Since then Children of Fire has helped more than 450 child burn survivors from across Africa receive surgery and care for burns injuries and collaborated with world class hospitals across the globe when necessary.
