Malta is an archipelago, comprised of seven islands, with its three largest and most inhabited islands known as Malta, Gozo and Comino. It is one of the worlds smallest, yet most densely populated countries, with a population of about 400,000, of which about 150,000 are foreigners, and only about 6,500 living in the capital city of Valletta. Before Malta won its independence in 1964, various nations from around the Mediterranean influenced Maltese culture in their style of music, literature, dance and architecture. With a unique landscape combining rustic cities, and lush rolling hills, Malta also possesses nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which feature some of the most ancient freestanding man-made structures that still survive today. Contrasting the old fortresses, Paceville has a reputable nightlife scene that is hopping seven days a week with bars, restaurants and dance clubs. Malta has developed to match its extremely successful tourism industry and there is a multitude of entertainment options ranging from outdoor activities, water sports, above and below the water, delectable restaurants and many more.

Since Malta was initially a British Colony, English is one of the official languages of the islands, along with Maltese. For those who are interested in learning, reinforcing or embracing their English language prowess, Malta is the destination to do it, as it prides itself on its English speaking capabilities while still embodying a diverse collection of international community and culture.

Blessed by 300 days of sunshine a year, some of the clearest waters in the entire Mediterranean Sea along its its coastlines, castles and ruins to rival those in Game of Thrones and only 58 miles from Sicily, Malta is an oasis of hedonistic conditions of weather, location and entertainment coupled with excellent opportunities to strengthen or utilize English skills through internships in a variety of fields.

Types of Internships in Malta

The majority of the internships in Malta focus on the study, training or mastering of the English language. There are several institutions that offer programs for those who have begun their study of English but are interested in developing their repertoire further. A fair majority of the institutions and internship programs in Malta are very supportive, offering work placement services as well as language courses prior to the internship. Guided preparation, assistance with residence in dorms, apartments, or with host families, accompaniment to the internship interview- just about anything that one could be uncertain about when going abroad for an internship, these programs will support every step of the way (for a fee of course).

The European School of English has placed students in jobs in at least 25 different divisions ranging from medical, creative, business, fitness, sales and many more. ESE’s program is very hands-on, from the moment you land, meeting you at the airport and transporting you to clean and safe apartments. From there, they will assist you every step of the way till you secure your interview and throughout your entire stay in Malta, they will check in and make sure that you are doing well. Other organizations that offer such monitored support programs for interested internship applicants in Malta include GeoVisions, PractiGo, InternshipMakers and StageMalta.

Each support organization has fees and specific requirements, which can be found on their respective websites, but it should be noted that these guided programs are best suited for those embarking on their first overseas internship/work placement experience and/or for those who have another native language other than English.

If English is your native language and you are also interested in revelling in the beautiful weather and atmosphere of Malta, there are internships in hospitality, marketing, and journalism. Balco Malta, offers an internship where you get to experience what goes in to making a hostel run in the various sectors of the hospitality industry. The Elanguest English Language School has a journalism internship for applicants looking to increase their skills in social media, travel writing, blogging and review writing, however this internship is only available to citizens from Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Elanguest also offers a few other internships in business, sales and marketing as well.
