The stunning eastern Mediterranean gem of the Republic of Cyprus has a reputation for spectacular dive spots, perfect weather, and the unique diversity between Turkish and Greek cultures. Cyprus is located below Turkey and east of Greece, and 36% in the north of the island dominated by the Turkish while the rest is owned by the Republic of Cyprus. The official language of Cyprus is Greek, though a large percentage of the population of 1 million people speaks Turkish as well. However, since the majority of people are involved in the booming tourism industry, almost everyone speaks English to some extent.

Hospitality

Tourism is one of the most prominent industries in Cyprus and not only nearby Europeans but several foreigners pursue this special island to bask on its beautiful beaches and thrive on the constant sunshine. The diversity of tourist nationalities means that employers are constantly on the look out for a variety of languages to accommodate the global clientele. Global Semesters offers a program during the summer months in the towns of Ayia Napa and Limasol. InCareers acts as a hub for hospitality opportunities all over the world, and highlight some of the best destinations to learn top quality hospitality skills. However, be wary of agencies that offer to find you a position in a hotel, especially entertainment positions, as there have been reports of scams and misconduct. One such agency to be on the lookout for is the Funtastic Entertainment Agency, which works in Paphos, and received concerning bad reviews.

Business & Marketing Services

Although it is a small island country, there are still opportunities to nab internships in business, marketing and office services departments. Companies like PWC, place a great deal of effort in training in their summer interns as they usually hire them on as Trainee, so it is always important to give your best effort and focus on these internships. An accounting internship through Abacus helps interns to understand what it is like to have a career in Global Business Services and receive training similar to that of an entrée-level employee.

Other

Teaching English is a beautifully universal way to find work and Cyprus has its own needs for English speakers. The Plato Institute is an educational institute that offers TESOL/TEFL opportunities for both students and teachers.  There are also many internship opportunities ranging from graphic design to customer care positions to be found in Lissamol. Cyprus Internships also features several postings for internships that span various fields.

Legal Documentation

A great deal of internships in Cyprus last about three months, and usually occur during summer. Depending on your country of origin, you may not have to acquire a visa if you are staying only up to 90 days, but this is just under a typical tourist classification. If you are entering under a working or studying category, EU citizens can work without a permit in another European country. For more details for EU citizens, please research here and for non-EU citizens, please find your country’s rights and restrictions here. As with all foreign internships, it is important to consult your host organization in order to solidify that you are legally prepared to enter and stay in the country.
