Tamang Heritage/Homestay Trek

Program Description

With a homestay program, tourists are able to live and stay in a local home in order to be immersed in the local culture. Homestays were developed to promote economic growth in rural regions, to generate a means of self-employment, support environmental sustainability, and to facilitate cross-cultural communication.

Tamang villages of Rasuwa district, namely Syabrubesi, Gatlang, Tatopani, Thuman and Briddim, are very remote. The access to the region is facilitated only by foot. A small population of the villages consist mostly of Tamang tribal people, one of the indigenous tribes of Nepal. Hailing from Tibet, Tamangs tend to ardent followers of Buddhism.

Ever since TRPAP (Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program) initiated our homestay trek in the Tamang Heritage Trail, the influx of tourists in the region has risen from 0 to over 35,000. Tourism in the region has brought education, employment and overall prosperity, and so this program has really helped to save and preserve the local Tamang tribal population.
