Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation and Animal Care in KZN, South Africa, with Budget Volunteering

Program Description

Are you an animal lover? Ever dreamed of working with exotic animals? Here is a great opportunity to help the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa. In addition to being a rehabilitation center, we also have an educational program to help raise awareness about wildlife and the Center.
There are about 300-400 animals in the Center's care at any given time. All animals are local to KZN including mammals, birds, raptors, reptiles and lots of monkeys! As a volunteer, it will be your responsibility to help with feeding and caring for the animals, helping nurses in the clinic, working on the grounds, cage construction and improvements and the best part is going out on rescues and releasing animals back into their natural habitat. You can also assist with school tours and events at the Center. Responsibilities are dependent on levels of experience and abilities.
Of course, we can not predict when an animal is in need of rescue so working with certain types of animals can vary through out the year. Sometimes are more hands-on than others. But all of our current rescues are in need of a loving hand.
Our volunteers will learn much about how important it is to conserve our wildlife. It is important to raise awareness to all those around us. It is a wonderful feeling to contribute to the well-being of an animal in need. So if you are unafraid to get your hands dirty, hard working and an animal enthusiast, then this is the volunteer program for you. The rewards are definitely worth it.

Program highlights

ACCOMMODATION:

VOLUNTEER HOUSING:
We offer two kinds of housing. There is a main house that holds up to 10 volunteers. Volunteers share rooms in this 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. We also have a smaller log cabin next to the main house for couples or volunteer groups. It sleeps up to 4 people.
Both accommodations have kitchens or kitchenettes, sitting rooms and bathrooms with a shower, sink and toilet but the smaller cabin does has a veranda where you can view the local thorn and fig trees. The larger house has a braai (barbeque) to cook meals outdoors. Both houses are located on the grounds that is surrounded by an electric fence so the animals are safe inside.

FOOD:
Three meals a day is provided by the program. Food is brought on a weekly basis. Please advise the Coordinator of the program of any special food needs such as vegetarian. These needs will be met within reason. Volunteers prepare their own meals with the food provided. Meals should be cooked with other volunteers including the volunteers in the main house.
