Teach English to Monks

Program Description

Enjoy life in a Buddhist Monastery as you marvel at the morning alms and saffron robes. Reach a peace within as you explore the monastery and form friendships with your students, the monks.

Buddhism is a cultural and religious force that permeates through Nepal. From innumerable temples to all of the refugee Tibetan Buddhists, this is a central area for the practice of Buddhism. The training to become a monk starts very young and there are many Nepalese men who begin their long path to monkhood. The tradition covers Buddhist philosophy and practices as well as general basics of learning including English.

English is very important to the education of young monks since they will be able to communicate teachings to a wide audience and translate religious texts. There are some monks who leave the monastery after a certain age and a comprehensive education is important for them so they can find a new career.
