Program Description
The public healthcare system in Honduras has a lot of issues and is one of the worst in all of Latin America. La Ceiba just opened a public hospital in the hopes of serving the most poverty-stricken community members. Very few affordable hospitals are available so even middle-class families make us of public hospitals. These hospitals are understaffed and in need of healthcare professionals and medical and nursing students to help out.
We are looking for medical and nursing students, EMT licensed professionals, and dental students to shadow and provide aid to local doctors and nurses. Volunteers will go along on daily routines, though duties will vary dependent on background and Spanish language skills.
Volunteers have the opportunity to go between departments such as the pharmacy, laboratory, and dental clinic. They will also be able to assist with checkups, clean wounds, provide sutures, and go on daily rounds. One week volunteers will only be able to observe and help with some basics, however, those who volunteer over a week will have a more hands-on experience.
This is a great volunteer opportunity for those looking to hone skills, add to resumes about developing nation’s healthcare, and improve Spanish abilities. For those who are not fluent or intermediate in Spanish, then we suggest our language immersion course. We also have translators available ($15 per day) so that they can help you overcome any issues. Volunteers must bring supplies such as scrubs, gloves, masks, and a stethoscope.
*Pre-medical and medical volunteers must pay $50 for a donation fee directly to the hospital. This fee is collected locally and required for all health-related placements.
