Elephant Protection Volunteer, Thailand

Program Description

Volunteer with Asian elephants in Thailand. These wonderful animals are often exploited and forced to do manual labour (they are used in logging- carrying felled trees through forests, as well as tourist elephant rides). People beat them until their spirit breaks and they become tame and obedient.

Participants of this unique volunteering experience will be able to contribute in a community of Mahouts (elephant owners) and re-educate them so they can understand that it is possible to earn a living through eco-tourism. Their elephants do not need to be abused, and can be allowed to behave naturally. The main aim of the project is to promote responsible elephant-based tourism in Thailand.

Volunteers are involved in agriculture to ensure that there is enough food for the elephants' appetites. In addition they go on an elephant trail to the local watering hole every day, and help wash the elephants at the lake. Tasks may also include building shelters, to ensure the elephants can stay cool. Volunteers also get involved in a wide array of cultural experiences on this programme.

If you are interested in helping animals and improving the way they are being treated, this is the right programme for you.
