Doctor - Professional Placement in Hyderabad, India

Program Description

Lack of access to affordable healthcare is a great barrier to poverty alleviation in South India. Where institutions fail, local change makers have taken it upon them to reach the segments of the rural population that needs it most. One of them is our partner organisation - having set up two rural health clinics, they are looking for doctors to support their expansion efforts to reach more people and increase their impact. As medical staff is in high demand in India - and a rare resource in rural areas - our partner organisation relies on volunteers to upgrade the skills of local paramedics and healthcare workers.
The main focus of this placement is staff training and cross-cultural collaboration. As an integral part of the local team, you will teach paramedics new skills through formal and informal learning experience, and help them improve best practices and protocols, whilst learning new skills yourself. Knowledge exchange has been proven to make the greatest impact - both for the volunteers and the local community.
Completing this placement in rural India is a once in a lifetime opportunity for professionals of every level. You will be challenged on a daily basis, practicing your creative and innovative thinking by finding new solutions in a resource-constraint environment. On top of professional growth, you'll find yourself developing as an individual. The experience will open your eyes to new perspectives, ways of living and understandings of your profession.

Program highlights

The focus of skill-based volunteering is the sharing of skills and knowledge. During this placement, the volunteer doctor is embarking on an incredible learning journey and will encounter and solve challenges that are unique to the context, but lead to the development of a broad set of new skills. Further highlights include complete cultural immersion and cross-cultural collaboration, experiencing life as a local, and learning about healthcare in a new setting. Finally, the volunteer will have the opportunity to make a long-lasting impact on the working and efforts of the partner organisation, thus improving the access to healthcare for the local community in the future.
