Program Description
You're welcome to play, as most clubs have three teams and a women's league for female volunteers. Coach at various local schools and cricket clubs. You'll work as an assistant coach alongside the Head Coach, with children from the age of 8 to 15. You don't need Spanish or coaching qualifications. Some areas you'll assist in include:
Organisation and planning of each class.
Pupil motivation
Organisation of events and competitions
Fitness/physical training
Coaching of rules
Refereeing
With younger kids the emphasis is on participation and having fun, while with older kids, activities are participatory, like catching exercises, bat-ball games, or hand-eye co-ordination drills.
Hours of work are from Monday to Friday, for an average of 4 hours a day. Cricket activities during school terms are exclusively in the afternoon, and all-day sporting activities in many clubs during the summer holidays. Cricket would be played for an hour or so during the day. Matches sometimes take place at the weekends and you'll be encouraged to attend these, although it won't be obligatory to do so.
"My role with the A.C.A was to help coach in both schools and clubs in different provinces in and around the Buenos Aires area. The children were a breath of fresh air as they were always keen and eager to learn a new sport, plus being a sports coach or "el professor" they respected me and fully took on board what I was saying.
I chose Argentina as it was a place that would both be a new and challenging experience as you would not associate Cricket with Argentina. So, if I could coach successfully in Argentina then I would have the confidence to enhance my coaching skills here in the UK.
Quite simply, I gained a wonderful experience, met some fantastic people who quickly became friends, learnt a new language and adapted to a unique culture. Most importantly though I gained a feel for self-independence and confidence that I would not have gained in any other way....Argentina, te amo." Graham Sprason
