Bottlenose Dolphin Research in Croatia

Program Description

Programmes run from every year from May to October and provide volunteers with the opportunity to take part in two opportunities for dolphin research.

Return to land for night, at sea during day – Dolphin Research takes place at Losinj base.
On board a sail boat – Dalmatian Coast Dolphin Research.

We welcome all students, groups, and individuals who are interested in research.

You will be researching the dynamics of the dolphin population including toxicological, forage ecology, and genetic analysis from collecting stranding data. Participants will also be involved with acoustic monitoring, behavioral sampling, and identification. Data will be used to create regular reports on the ecology and status of the population and aid with initiatives for conservation. From Veli Lošinj, the research station will allow our group to study the daily behavior of the dolphin populations in the region. Using photo-identification, we have identified about 450 individual dolphins.

Program highlights

We work according to the conditions of the sea, so there are no typical days. Searching for dolphins aboard boats will take place when seas are calm and the weather is pleasant. Specific tasks are essential as soon as dolphins are sighted. Researchers photograph dolphins for identification and you will assist with recording data including names, behavioral activities, breakdown and number of the animals, and the time. You may even have the opportunity to assist with acoustic sampling. Acoustic sampling is when researchers place the hydrophone in the water when regularly stopping the boat.

The base is for when the seas are not calm and will allow students to analyze data and prepare reports and papers, alongside everyday duties. We feature daily lectures on marine environment and cetacean biology. Volunteers have the chance to visit the island during their free time and explore new beaches and paths for snorkeling and swimming in the breathtaking sea.

The Lošinj Marine Educational Centre (LMEC) launches educational activities that volunteers are expected to assist with. Responsibilities include assisting students and staff and bringing visitors throughout the centre while explaining exhibits. Researchers and volunteers have Sunday as a free day, which allows for fun excursions such as diving.
