Paris: Urban Landscape through a Cultural Lens

Program Description

Parisian history has encompassed a heritage that includes a rich diversity in urban culture, politics, religion, science and technology, and the arts. This studio program will delve into the policy of design in Paris which has roots that reach to the current day. The course covers the work developed under Louis XIV, the results of the French Revolution, the growth of Napoleon, and the advance in technology and infrastructure under Haussman. Since these developments grew in a public sphere, the art, infrastructure, and architecture has impacted the daily lives of local Parisians. This course will include guest lectures, visits to design studios, and the experiences of the local culture.
