Middlebury School in Uruguay: Montevideo

Program Description

Uruguay is often forgotten about in the travel plans of tourists and remains a hidden treasure for an unparalleled study abroad experience. Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, contains over half of the country's three million people. With its wide, clean beaches and charming colonial Ciudad Viejo, the city moves to its own distinctive beat. Montevideo has primarily a Spanish and Italian heritage and boasts abundant cultural and entertainment attractions, including museums, cinemas, theaters, an exciting nightlife, and fascinating architecture.

Students take a combination of the following types of courses:
1. Middlebury-organized writing course
2. Direct enroll courses alongside local students
3. Credit-bearing internships

Linguistic development and cultural understanding are at the core of the Middlebury Schools Abroad, and students have many opportunities for immersion, from coursework entirely in Spanish to housing with local students; from internships and volunteer work to activities among the student body of the host institutions. Our goal is to provide an enriching academic experience and to give students the best chance of actively engaging in their new environment.
