Go Beyond Abroad in Central America

Program Description

We are affiliated with Grupo Fenix in Nicaragua to raise the standard of living of the local community and helping them to become more environmentally and economically sustainable. Volunteers will help to put up solar power grids and systems for energy that renews and bio-digesters that will generate renewable energy that is free and will help to stop erosion and deforestation.

We will also spend 11 days at Selva Negra, a sustainable coffee plantation and one of the world’s inspiring ecological farms. We will do a variety of service-learning projects while living in and learning from a community committed to living sustainably. We will learn how ecological, economic, and social sustainability is achievable from a community doing it!

Costa Rica is committed to wildlife and habitat conservation through sustainability initiatives launched in the community. Kekoldi is a sustainable development organization in the rainforest of the Talamanca region. Volunteers will learn about the Bri Bri indigenous group who are involved with the community in preserving natural resources.

Asociacion ANAI is a Costa Rican sustainability organization that partners with us to help launch community-based initiatives and practices on sustainable development. ANAI works with villagers in the Talamanca region and has helped rural communities become self-reliant through environmentally and economically sustainable activities.

The program ends on a two-week stay at Altamira de Biolley, a community in the hills along the Pacific coast. We are affiliated ASOPROLA, an organization that seeks to protect the environment and to recover and preserve cultural values. Half of the territory of the Biolley district is found within La Amistad International Park.
