Volunteer in Morocco Project Descriptions

Teaching French or Teaching English

While literacy and professional development rates have improved due to initiatives launched by the Moroccan Government through the National Initiative for Human Development (NIHD), there is a large population of local children and teenagers who have not had the opportunity to gain valuable skills for a future career. A second language would go a long way to helping these Moroccan youth increase their education and eventually finding a stable position. As a volunteer, you will teach underprivileged children English, French and information technology (IT). Volunteers will run small workshops will helping local teachers. You will also help organize educational games and activities and even be able to work in summer camps. During your application period, please specify whether you will be Teaching French or Teaching English or even if you can teach both languages. Volunteers need not have had prior experience teaching or be qualified.

Childcare

As a childcare volunteer, you will have the opportunity to guide and work with special needs children as well as those from disadvantaged neighborhoods. Organize and launch in fun activities that will engage these children while allowing them to develop cognitive abilities. Volunteers will create daily activities which include physical development (toy, games, music and movement), theatre, arts and crafts (drawing and painting) and literature and language. These underprivileged children will be provided with interesting and enriching activities designed by volunteers. Volunteer hours do not exceed 4-5 hours each day, five days a week. Students can even combine their volunteer duties with Arabic studies. You will volunteer two hours a day with days of to concentrate on Arabic.

Working with Women

Unemployment, illiteracy and poverty are some of the issues facing women in the cities and villages of Morocco. This not only affects their social environment, it could also negatively affect their children’s education and growth. NIHD was established in 2005 and through this organization, the Moroccan government has worked to address issues facing education, culture, and health while encouraging income generating prospects for women. As a volunteer with the MCAS Working with Women initiative, you will help underprivileged Moroccan women increase levels of literacy and aid them with developing professionally. You will be placed in organizations centered in Rabat or in rural villages in order to help young girls and local women. Your primary duties will concern education and classroom teaching. You might also need to assist with offering academic support, teaching IT and computer classes, instructing French and/or English, designing activities and sports, and teaching arts and crafts as well as sewing. If you have the relevant background, you may also teach courses on management, finance, and potential income generating trade in universities, high schools, and schools. You will also provide support to victims of domestic violence and abuse. Volunteers with an education foundation will be asked to train local instructors on pedagogy as well as the importance of gender equality. Additional tasks depend on the duration of your volunteer stint since long-term volunteers will be able to involve themselves in more activities depending on relevant training.

Volunteers in the Working with Women program must have an at least intermediate level ability in Arabic and/or French. This is recommended to make sure volunteers are successful since many of the local women do not speak English.
