Introduction to Field Archaeology in Cyprus

The course will be based at LARC with a number of the practical workshops being carried out at the local Chalcolithic site of Lemba Lakkous, and the adjacent reconstructed experimental village.

The course will run for two weeks and aims to provide an introduction to archaeology as a whole, using Cyprus as a case study. The course will be based around a series of seminars, practical workshops and will also include a number of expert guided field trips to local sites including the World Heritage sites at the Paphos Mosaics and Tombs of the Kings.

Workshops and seminars in the course will provide participants an introduction to the study of archaeology; Seminars and lectures on the prehistory of Cyprus, from the Neolithic up until the Roman period; Lessons in how to conduct basic surveying and standing building recording with practical workshops carried out at a reconstructed Chalcolithic village; Training in artefact identification and drawing using artifacts uncovered from local excavations; Practical workshop in how to draw and record archaeological sites carried out at the Chalcolithic site of Lemba-Lakkous; Archaeological photography, and basic photography skills using the artifacts from local sites; An introduction to Experimental Archaeology and reconstruction techniques, with practical workshops in reconstructing a Chalcolithic village, and brewing Bronze Age beer; and an introduction to Bioarchaeology with analysis and identification of human bones, and an introduction to identifying animal bones.

HARP Archaeology runs an Introduction to Field Archaeology course based near Paphos, Cyprus from the 5th to the 18th April 2015.

The course is suitable for all levels, including beginners, and also provides a set of skills training that is relevant to any archaeology student.

The course is delivered by a team of professional archaeologists, along with specialists in zoo archaeology, physical anthropology and experimental archaeology.

Participants will build a key set of skills required for archaeological fieldwork that will be used to build a portfolio of work including technical drawings, survey work and photography, all to a professional standard.

The village has a rich and varied history and has beautiful views west over the Mediterranean, the perfect place to enjoy a sunset! The course will take place in the idyllic village of Lemba, located approximately 6km from the historic centre of Paphos.
