Medicine at the University of Debrecen

To complete a full course of Medical Studies, you will study for a total of six years that encompass ten semesters and one year-long internship program. Foreign students will be taught in English although students will need to learn Hungarian. This is an important language to learn to so that foreign students can speak with patients after they have moved passed the third year. Native Hungarian students are welcome to be a part of the Hungarian Program of the Medical School.

Students will study the theoretical foundations of medicine during the first four semesters (two years). This will set students up with a solid knowledge of other medical subjects in later years.

Students will go over subjects covering the theory of diseases including the beginnings of how internal medicine and surgery are conducted during their third year.

Pharmacology will start during the fourth and fifth years as well as the continuation of studying clinical subjects.

Students in the sixth year will sit examinations in internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, neurology, psychiatry and pediatrics.

A two or three month internship segment will precede each final exam. Final year students need to submit a thesis. Aspiring medical doctors will sit a comprehensive state exam their final academic year. This exam will require students to show their competence in crucial practical and theoretical areas of general medicine. Students who pass all their exams and who successfully defend their theses will be given an M.D. Degree.

Elective Courses

Students need to enroll in elective courses as a part of their undergraduate course in general medicine. In the Clinical Sciences, these are focused on clinical reality as well as the practical tasks and issues of direct patient care. This includes patient management, therapeutics and diagnostics. In the Theoretical Sciences, electives revolve around basic research, social sciences, legal and economic sciences.
