  3. The Best Activities in Cabo San Lucas - Mexico

The Mexican Rivera sounds exotic especially when you start thinking about the blue waters of Cabo San Lucas. As a favourite port for International sailors getting away from the winter blues of Europe, cruising to Cabo has to be among the best spots for a complete holiday getaway. Come with me to see that it is not just about trendy shopping and luxury resorts. A playground for water sports and taste treat for lovers of seafood and Margaritas, Cabo has it all. With the harbour lined with every style of restaurant offering every style of food, the hardest decision you will have to make in your day is which one to try. Here’s what to do with your days.

CAMELS AND SAND

A camel and Mexican outback adventure is the perfect way to soak up the atmosphere. “Board” your camel for a ride along the pristine beach of an ocean-side ranch. Here you will be taught the art of Tortilla making while sampling Tequila. Lunch is a typical Baja style meal where you will be served “Mole” – chicken in chocolate sauce. The town of Cabo San Lucas now stretches out before you. The canyons of the coast frame to landscape as you board your 4x4 Mercedes Unimog to travel through the cactus lined streams. Nature lovers have not been forgotten on this excursion with a walk through the reserve.

HIGH FLYING RUGGED ZIPLINE

For the adrenalin junky this next excursion is for you. A five and a half hour eco tour packed with challenges not for the feint hearted starts in a UNESCO protected area of the Sierras. Professionally trained guides provide the gear before accompanying you on the canopy circuit. Here you will fly 200 feet above the ground taking in the canyons before testing your metal on the Commando Bridge. Follow this up with their “crazy” ladder and a 90 foot rappel. Note that cameras will not be allowed due to the slightly dangerous nature of the tour. Food and water is provided as part of the package.

BEACHSIDE HORSE RIDING

It never surprises me how many people love riding along the beach and this next excursion doing just that is a perfect way to spend a half day. The Carisuva ranch is just one property offering this style of adventure. Here you will be matched to a horse according to your riding ability before heading off along the edge of the Pacific Ocean before following the path taking you through canyon trails to -Cactus spot- and observe exotic desert fauna. This tour is on my recommended list.

SWIM WITH THE DOLPHINS

Children will love the Dolphin Encounter. The bottlenose dolphin is a favourite with little people for its gentle nature and curiosity. Who doesn’t like to hug a dolphin. The trainers supervise the “play” where you can feed the dolphins and encourage them to show you their dancing prowess. So pack your swimmers – and your children big and small for this peaceful and rewarding one and a half hour adventure.

LUXURY SAILING

With the Pacific Ocean stretching languidly in front of you, perhaps a luxury sailing experience is more to your liking. Cabo has the perfect activity for you on a deluxe Benetau sailboat. With a tropical breeze at your back and the deep turquoise water beneath you, it is an atmosphere that allows you to be pampered by the staff while basking in the tropical sun and languishing on oversized cushions. The experience allows you to witness sea turtles, manta rays, wild dolphins and whales during the summer season. There is also an opportunity to try a paddle board or snorkel or simply swim in the crystal clear ocean.

DEEP SEA FISHING

Cabo is known as the Marlin capital of the world so here is the opportunity to test your skills on a five hour game fishing expedition. Mahi Mahi, Sail fish and Wahoo are amongst the species frequenting these waters. Catch and release – after photos of course- the big ones. Fishing gear and lunch is included with 12 being the minimum age for the tour.

BEACH AND SNORKEL

Santa Maria and Chileno Bays are perfect locations for eco snorkelling. Mexico is very conscious of the fact that they have a marine area that needs to be protected and valued, hence the dedication to the preservation of these waters. The Sea of Cortez is at Lands End which is accessible only by boat or Zodiac. Lovers Beach, the sea lion colony and the Arch are all part of the three and a half hour tour. There are over 50 species of exotic fish in Santa Maria Bay alone. Suggested fitness level is moderate and the ride back to shore can be bumpy at times.

PARASAILING ON THE PACIFIC OCEAN

What better way to see Cabo than from the air on a one and a half hour Parasailing adventure. Have you ever wondered what a bird must feel like as it soars above the ocean surface – well this is a close to an answer as you can get. Launching from the boats deck, you will see Lands End, Lovers Beach and the Arch from the best vantage point possible.

SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE FISH SPOTTING

Don’t fancy getting wet, then the Cabo semi - submersible sub is the tour for you. For one hour you will witness the underwater world of the Sea of Cortez. Those Manta Rays mentioned earlier are now visible from the air-conditioned comfort of the 33 seat submersible. Over 500 species of fish swim right up to your large viewing window and dolphins playfully nudge at you suggesting a play date. As the semi-submersible never leaves the surface, there is ample opportunity to go “up top” to take photographs, especially when a whale shark appears.

SCUBA DIVING SAN LUCAS BAY

The certified two tank dive is the ideal way to explore the deep underwater canyons just off San Lucas Bay. Snapper and Goat fish can be found just off the coast in the rocky outcrops that are their haven for breeding. Divers must be in good physical condition and provide a medical release form at time of booking. Guest must also present a CCard and have logged at least one dive in the last  twelve months. Equipment is included in the price.
