Tennessee is the 17th most densely populated state in the United States. It is based in the American South. The city of Memphis sits on the confluence of two rivers – the Wolf and Mississippi. It is the largest city in Tennessee and the 20th largest in the United States.
While Tennessee is a laid back state in all, Memphis is a resplendent city with a vibrant student populace, resplendent art, a deep and rich musical culture, and a charming appeal. Backed by the artistry of a dynamic, fast-evolving student community and an overall lively ambience, Memphis promises to be a great experience for students searching for internships.
Memphis has been credited as the birthplace of Rock and Roll and is widely hailed as the global BBQ capital. Both music and food of the city are attractions in their own rights, with the latter attracting nationwide and global tourists.
The major event of interest, “Memphis in May,” is an extravagant montage of music, art and delectable food. The event runs through an entire month furthering the heritage of the city beyond city and state borders. Four of the most acclaimed events are the Beale Street Musical Festival, the Sunset Symphony, International Week and the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest, the last serving as the largest-in-the-world pork-barbeque preparation contest.
Prior to Memphis in May, there is the Africa in April festival, designed to promote and celebrate arts, history, culture, and diversity characteristic to the African Diaspora. The three-day festival includes an international parade on diversity, vendors’ market, fashion and blues showcases.
Come June, Memphis becomes home to the Marquette Park Memphis Italian festival, hosting local artisans, musical acts and classified competitions based on Italian cooking. Other events include a pizza tossing tournament, the Coors Light Competitive Bocce Tournament, a Volleyball tournament, and the Galtelli Cup Recreational Bocce tournament.
Among popular places of interest are Graceland, National Civil Rights Museum and the Pink Palace. Graceland was once home to Elvis Presley. Among the important cemeteries and parks is the Mud Island River Park. Making distances easier to traverse, the popular destinations of the city can be accessed by a central transport layout wherein buses provide access to all major destinations.
On the corporate front, the city is host to three Fortune 500 companies: FedEx, AutoZone and International Paper.
The University of Memphis boasts of a vibrant student ethos with some 5000 students participating in the academic internships made available by the university system’s online dashboard and student services. These students are given exposure to experiential learning like student teaching and other practicum that consort to field-experience. The university is committed to providing to students real-world and valuable experience that can only be cultivated through internships.
In addition to the University of Memphis, one can also find several other colleges around Memphis with plentiful internship options. Some of these are the LeMoyne-Own College, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Southern College of Optometry, Christian Brothers University, Memphis College of Art and Memphis School of Preaching.
A logical question here would be the likelihood of finding and taking up an internship in Memphis. It is worth re-mention here that Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee with a sprawling density of opportunities. There are several growing businesses in the city where students might just find the ideal launch pads for their careers.
Memphis is the perfect place to be for people with all kinds of interests; especially for 20-something students. The vibrant downtown’s music-weaved environment and some breath-taking monuments fuse to make Memphis a great place to live. Though most of the city is well connected with buses, there is practically no need for them in the enchanted downtown, where much of the best parts of the city are within walking distance.
