Based in Washington D.C., National Geographic Magazine is searching for an applicant with an interest in map production. Interns will collaborate with the graphic editors in developing and producing maps and informational graphics for both digital and print.

Responsibilities

As an intern in the maps department, some of the responsibilities that will be expected of you in this position include creating maps based on informational graphics, spatial data and other statistics that will then be used in a number of media locations. In order to produce these maps, interns will also be expected to research and collect data. You will also be involved in the process of developing ideas for the publication in numerous categories including scientific topics, cultural subjects, geo-political matters and most typical of National Geographic, wildlife related features. Your experience in the Nat Geo maps department will give you an authentic depiction of the professional environment of magazine and website production, as well as time management with scheduling and project deadlines, collaborating with team members and practicing professional social conduct with external clients, partners and artists.

If you are interested in this internship, you are expected to have exceptional organizational skills in regards to time management, and prioritization of projects, without compromising quality of work. In addition to having an artistic eye, the prime applicant will have experience with visual storytelling and journalism. Programs that applicants should be fluent in include Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign CS6 on a Mac platform, as well as being able to work with ArcGIS, particularly geo-processing and data processing function experience. Being familiar with HTML, D3, Adobe Edge, Natural Science Designer and After Effects are all considered a plus. As to be expected, Nat Geo especially encourages applicants with previous journalistic backgrounds and previous employment related to maps to apply for this internship.

In order to qualify for this internship, applicants should be either undergraduate or graduate students majoring in fields related to journalism, geography, GIS, cartography or other related majors. However, recent graduates may also be considered for the internship. 

Submit an online application, as well as a cover letter including background information about you and your interests in pursuing a career as a journalistic cartographer. You must also send in five samples of your work in cartography and informational graphics are a bonus!
