China is a vast and fascinating country. It is rich in history and culture with Beijing alone being home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is definitely an interesting place to visit. China is one of the most populous countries in the world and with a huge landmass; we’re talking about a large swath of the world. Still unsure about how this number of people translates into situations in daily life? In China: 

80 billion chopsticks—or the equivalent of 20 million trees—are used every year! And that’s not including the number of non-disposable chopsticks or chopsticks used worldwide at Chinese restaurants every year. 

The longest traffic jam in history occurred in Beijing in 2010. We have all been stuck in traffic but this one was particularly bad - it was 62 miles (or nearly 100 kilometers) long and took nearly two weeks to clear. That’s a long time to be stuck in your car!

In the ‘70s, Mao Zedong wanted to send 10 million Chinese women to the United States. This, he reasoned, would slow the population growth in China and accelerate it in the US. Although ultimately unsuccessful, we might wonder what Chinatowns across the US would look like now if this plan had been followed through… 

More than 2 million people are employed to check internet activity in China. The project to monitor internet activity is often colloquially referred to as the ’Great Firewall of China’ although it is officially called The Golden Shield Project. They block many websites most of us are used to using regularly like Netflix, Facebook, YouTube, and many more—but don’t worry; fortunately, you can get around these restrictions by setting up a VPN on your computer or other device!
