Program Description

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE INSTITUTE (NCU-ESLI)
NCU—ESLI offers an intensive English language programme designed specifically for three groups:
1. Non-English speaking students who need English proficiency before undertaking college/university studies.
2. Non-English speaking professional who need English.
3. Non-English speaking persons in the trades, etc., who need the language.

It is designed to help students speak, read, and write English. Textbooks are complemented by the use of authentic documents and audio-visual material. The ESLI prefers if applicants are above the beginning level. However, it is prepared to accept students of any level.
A student entering ESLI 131-134, the Intermediate 1 Level, must have a Test of English As A Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 133. At the Intermediate Level, a student enrolls for ESLI classes only. At the Advanced Level, a student may be allowed to take regular college-level courses along with ESLI classes. The number of courses is determined in consultation with director of the English as a Second Language Institute.
A student enrolled in ESLI is released from the programme upon achieving one of the following:
1. A TOEFL score of 213 (with no section lower than 18)
