Medical Program Internship

Program Description

The Medical Program strives to gain access to health care for impoverished, indigenous individuals in the Guatemalan Highlands who do not have the resources to access such care, both financially and otherwise. The Medical Program also consists of an on-site clinic in Mayan Families’ main office in Panajachel called the Charlie Gomez Medical Clinic. While we are currently staffing the clinic with rotating volunteer examiners, we are also looking to hire a full-time physician. Mayan Families hosts many visiting medical groups throughout the year, including general medical teams, dental teams, and ophthalmology teams. Mayan Families works with these groups to bring much-needed aid to communities in the Highlands of Guatemala.

Internship Aims:
● Input relevant data into database and excel document used to track medical cases
● Help organize medical cases
● Analyze data from patient intake forms for various purposes within the Medical Program
● Process the raw information on patient intake forms in order to create quantitative and qualitative data

The selected intern will also assist with general help and administrative work in the Medical Program, including:
● Translate for visiting doctors
● Work alongside medical coordinator in organizing activities for visiting medical brigades, as well as being present when visiting doctors see patients
● When/if the clinic is staffed by a full-time physician, assist them with administrative tasks
● Assist medical coordinator in communication with donors
● Assist in organizing the medical clinic supplies and keeping track of inventory
● Blog posts pertaining to medical issues/news and urgent medical cases when necessary

Expected Outputs:
• Organization of medical data and patient information within the Medical Program database
• Creation of supportive statistical materials for presentations to current and prospective donors. Creativity is highly encouraged in coding, analyzing and presenting the data. The results from this research should be geared toward creating interesting marketing content.
