2-Week Marine Ecological Internship in Sardinia
Program Description
Join the team of MareTerra - Environmental Research and Conservation in Alghero, Sardinia (Italy). Our projects are carried out inside the Marine Protected Area of Capo Caccia and Piana Island and the Regional Natural Park of Porto Conte.
Students are involved in some of our research and conservation projects in the consequent field and laboratory activities, in particular:
- Population dynamics and conservation of bottlenose dolphin in Northern Sardinia (Italy): take part in the boat trips dedicated to the study of the bottlenose dolphin, learning and applying the techniques of observation of marine mammals in the field, collection of behavioural and acoustic data and their analysis, photo identification method.
- The ecological importance and conservation of the Mediterranean seagrass (Posidonia oceanica): field surveys aimed at measuring the effect of human activities on the conservation status of P. oceanica and on the effectiveness of management actions carried out in marine protected areas (MPAs). The estimate of damage on the prairies inside and outside MPAs is carried out by drones, underwater surveys and image analysis.
- Long-term research program for the study of the effects of tourism and climate change on coastal marine species and habitats: collection and analysis of data related to the abundance of fish species, measurement of environmental and anthropogenic variables and in the collection of acoustic data by means of Passive Acoustic Monitoring device.
