Middlebury School in Japan: Tokyo

Program Description

The Middlebury School in Japan offers an exceptional academic program to undergraduates at U.S. colleges and universities. Students who have completed two years of Japanese training are invited to participate in the program under the Middlebury Language Pledge®, a commitment to speak exclusively the target language for the duration of their time abroad.

The serious student of Japanese will find a distinctive immersive experience at the School in Japan. International Christian University, the host institution, boasts a national reputation for superior language instruction. ICU is a nondenominational university whose bilingual liberal arts curriculum attracts Japanese students with a global perspective. The university's suburban setting in the Mitaka neighborhood is also a plus: its spacious, grassy campus lies just 30 minutes away from the center of Tokyo by train.

Students take a combination of the following types of courses:
1. Japanese Language Program (JLP) courses taught by local faculty at our partner institution, International Christian University (ICU).
2. Middlebury Cultural Portfolio course
3. Direct enrollment courses at ICU alongside Japanese students
4. Credit-bearing internships

Linguistic development and cultural understanding are at the core of the Middlebury Schools Abroad, and students have many opportunities for immersion, from coursework entirely in Japanese to internships and volunteer work.
