Summer 2015 Peruvian Amazon Expedition

Program Description

By day you will cut your way through the untouched jungle and by night you will camp to the sounds of it wildlife. This expedition will take you deep into the Peruvian jungle, into the Amazon basin to trek and study the rich biodiversity of the cloud forest environment. A unique opportunity to experience first-hand the mind blowing biodiversity, hidden valleys, jungle mountains and cloud forest of the Amazon.

This is important science work which you will be undertaking to help Crees protect and conserve this area. Working in partnership with international NGO, the Crees Foundation, you will be actively involved in expanding their study and understanding of this amazing area. It is hoped that you will also have the chance to get involved with the local people and help out on a number of sustainability programmes. Observe wild monkeys, birds, snakes, butterflies and a huge array of reptiles, including some species of frog new to science; you may even get to see signs of the elusive jaguar.

Plus you will have the chance to document your extraordinary experience through photography and adventure film-making.

Prior projects include:

-Conservation: Repairing trails through fragile rainforest environments. Building artificial hatching sites for turtles.
-Ethnobiology: Studying indigenous populations and their natural resources.
-Entomology: Studying the breeding habits of mosquitoes in an attempt to further understand the transmission of carried diseases.
-Biology: Monitoring the abundance and diversity of wildlife. Surveying the size, composition and behaviour of pink and grey river dolphins. Assessing the impact of hunting on monkey populations and ecosystem health. Studying lemur migration and habitats. Investigating the abundance of different species of caiman and their preferred habitats.

We have 3 or 5 week options, or our 6-week Trainee Leader programme which aims to assist you in the initial stages of your transition from ambitious adventurer to professional expedition leader as, over the 9 month course of the programme, you gain relevant qualifications, develop practical expedition leadership skills and acquire invaluable in-field experience.
