Dentistry at the University of Debrecen

Our Dental Studies Program takes ten semesters (five years).

This is a highly structured five year program at Debrecen. This has been formulated to the highest standards of abilities, knowledge and ensuring responsibility in aspiring dental surgeons.

First year students will be grounded in a foundation of introductory medical sciences including Biochemistry, Genetics and Biophysics. Second year students will continue on to learn Histology, Behavioral Sciences, Anatomy, and Physiology as these subjects pertain to Dentistry. Specific dental subjects including Dental Materials, Odontology, Technics, and Preventive Dentistry will be taught alongside the other core classes.

Third year students will move on to learning about the foundational theories of diseases including Pathophysiology, Microbiology, and Pathology. These subjects will be taught as related to Oral Sciences. Students will also go through Propedeutics of Clinical Dentistry in order to learn dental techniques and procedures that cover clinical treatments of patients through demonstrations in the laboratory as well as the phantom head room.

Fourth year students will start treating patients through the Clinical Practice Unit as well as other specific clinical departments. Students will learn about all clinical dental fields such as Prosthetic Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, and Paedodontics. Fourth and fifth year students will be responsible for taking care of their own patients. This will occur under a close monitoring by staff members in small group settings.

Alongside the mandatory dental classes, students will also need to cover additional clinical medical sciences.

At the end of the final year of our program, dental students need to turn in and defend a thesis and then sit a final exam.

Students who have passed all their exams and who have successfully defended their thesis will earn a D.M.D. degree.
