STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
Bioinformatics and Systems Biology are highly interdisciplinary fields. The programme combines molecular and cell biology, computer science and mathematical modelling to produce fundamental knowledge by integrating vast amounts of biological data. Bioinformatics is more data-oriented, while Systems Biology focuses more on the mechanism of molecular interactions. You will develop a strong feeling for scientific research and high levels of abstraction, and learn to combine the rapid developments in these fields. After an in-depth introduction to both disciplines, you can specialize in either Systems Biology or Bioinformatics. This high-quality Master of Science programme is a collaboration between VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. The Bioinformatics programme has an excellent international reputation and is led by research groups with extensive experience in a broad range of practical applications and theoretical research.

Bioinformaticians convert genomics data into knowledge. To do so, they make integrated use of contributions mathematics, computer science, chemistry, medicine and biology.
