Wildlife Orphanage in South Africa

Program Description

The aim of this project, run by our non-profit partner, is to inspire underprivileged children to discover a passion for their environment through education, development and motivation. In order to achieve this, our partners provide interactive lessons through a wildlife orphanage.

South Africa has a large population of under-privileged children resulting in dramatic overcrowding in schools where classes can have more than 160 pupils. Often the consequence of this is lack of basic education and this has implications for the surrounding environment.

The ecology of South Africa is affected by those who do not understand how essential the environment is for their own survival. Most South-African children live in areas where the indigenous wildlife continues to be eliminated and their heritage compromised.

Program highlights

Every Monday morning, the centre collects a group of eight underprivileged children from their school to come and stay at the Wildlife Orphanage. A different group are collected each week so that the work is spread throughout the students and in different local communities. They are all between the ages of 13 and 15 and are usually in a class of between 60 and 100 pupils at their daily schools. Many of them haven’t learnt their times tables yet, have very limited levels of English and it’s very rare for them to have the benefit of one to one attention in the classroom.
