Program Description
This is a unique project, teaching Guatemalan children and youth with limited resources about carpentry, and through that, improve their standards of living.
The project has a complete workshop in Alotenango, where they receive training according to a curriculum, learning different stages and skills of carpentry. By following the study plan that includes theory and practice, they learn to make their own products, and this stimulates their self-esteem and social skills.
There are long-term and short-term activities for volunteers. Long term:
- support training in education by coaching the local teachers.
- create educational material, organize events
- assist in lessons (high Spanish necessary)
Short term:
Painting, small tasks, maintain tools, elaborate photo, and video material, make a documentary or something, do workshops for Nov. 1st.
For carpenters with experience, there is the opportunity to participate in a project, providing furniture to a hostel in Antigua.
Program highlights
In this project, your work schedule will be flexible, so it's perfect to combine your volunteering with Spanish lessons in the afternoons, which is a nice way to improve your Spanish but also learn about the Guatemalan culture.
