Lend a Hand to Improve Lives in Uganda

Program Description

Family and self-labor are what rural communities are still reliant on in Uganda. Water is collected by hand as is firewood and harvesting. Charcoal and firewood meet around 90% of the energy requirements of Ugandan communities. Since this is usually subsistence work, family members are unpaid and this huge economic sector is considered “informal”. The idea of meeting the economic market needs is not a daily consideration.

As an organization, AIAV is dedicated to ensuring that local communities are working towards micro-economic opportunities while sharing resources and participating in physically healthy endeavors. HIV/AIDS is a real issue and has laid waste to much of the most productive members of the society. Education is the only way to combat the fear and superstition that this virus has instilled in communities. Volunteers will work with local developmental organizations to disseminate information about STDs and HIV/AIDS while assisting with economic growth and providing counseling.

Volunteer responsibilities may include:

* Taking care of orphans
* Public education on HIV/AIDS awareness and sanitation
* Organizing and leading recreational activities through music, dance, sports, etc.
* Teach ESL to locals
* Paint school murals
* Plant trees
* Help build a school or clinic
