Amazon Basin Research & Conservation Volunteer Programme

Program Description

When you volunteer with us as a research assistant, you will have the opportunity to work in some of the most remote and unspoiled parts of the Amazon Rainforest. We are looking for people to help with long-term scientific research in order to better measure the effects of human activities on wildlife.

We offer the opportunity to work with four taxonomic groups: mammals, birds, herpetofauna, and insects. Each project is one, two, or three weeks in length, although the minimum length of time is one week. As a volunteer you will learn about all of the taxonomic groups in order to increase your spectrum of knowledge. Not only will you cover the practical and theoretical background of the field methods used, you will also learn identification tips and be able to contribute to the ongoing discussion between organisations regarding the current issues facing the rainforest.

Depending on which taxonomic group you work with, here are a few examples of daily tasks that you might be involved in:

- Check and create mammal footprint traps
- Build and maintain herpetofauna pitfall traps and check them daily
- Help set up mist nets along the trail systems, monitor the nets and carefully process the birds caught in them
- Assist in creating, setting up and monitoring tropical bait traps for butterflies.
