Global Learning, Belize

Program Description

When: JUNE 1-JUNE 14, 2016

There are over one thousand registered archaeological sites in Belize, some in limestone caves hidden deep in the pristine jungles of the tropical rainforest. Belize is home to the Belize Barrier Reef, the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.

Full of surprises, this small sparsely populated country in northern Central America introduces students to a diversity of cultures and languages. Although English is the official language, the people of Belize (just over 300,000) represent a wide array of cultures.

Course:

Global Learning in Belize: A Four field Anthropological Experience: an introduction to globalization and sustainability abroad, the Belize program is open to all students regardless of major, and is ideal for students with interests in anthropology, sociology, political science, and international business. The curriculum provides students a general overview of the four subfields of anthropology: archaeological, biological, cultural, and linguistic.
The course begins with an online pre-travel orientation that covers concepts such as ethnocentrism and cultural
relativism. Once in Belize, students will be exposed both in theory and in practice to the anthropological concepts of multilingualism, linguistic code-switching as a way of navigating multiple identities, ethnocentrism and cultural relativity, tourist motivation and practices, and arts of the African diaspora.

Program highlights

This is a fascinating program with a curriculum that delves into many fields including linguistic, cultural, biological, and archaeological. This is also an introduction to sustainability and globalization overseas.

Caribbean Accomodation
Students stay at different hotels, eco-resorts, and jungle lodges with a range of modern conveniences as we travel throughout the country of Belize. All but a few meals during the trip are included in the program costs. The variety of accommodations is a component of our discourse on the anthropology of tourism.

Excursions
Global Learning Belize is a holistic onsite learning experience, giving students the opportunity to participate in unique excursions.
