Volunteer in the education area

This is a Guatemalan-Dutch NGO, which works towards building a better future for Guatemalan children where such work is needed most. They believe the keys to achieving such a goal are: education, empowering local communities and reaching self-sufficiency.
In January 2009, they opened a primary school in the town of Ciudad Vieja. The school offers access to education to children from the most underprivileged families, who would not have such an opportunity otherwise. Some of our students are the first of their families to achieve literacy. The school is built to hold eight grades of pre-school and primary school (grades pre-kindergarten through sixth).
In 2009, the school was started with three grades. Each year, a new grade is added to the school so that by 2014 the school will be completed.

What can the volunteer do?
• In the mornings, volunteers work as teachers assistants. To work in this program, volunteers are required to work 5 days a week and an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish is needed.
• For the afternoon program Expresión Artística, volunteers are encouraged to design their own program in something such as music, sports, or theater to facilitate with the children. You will receive support from the teachers as well during classes. For this program, volunteers must be available 2 afternoons a week and a basic level of Spanish is required.
• We also have volunteers help in the afternoon program “Refuerzos.” In this program, volunteers work one-on-one

In this project, you can work in the mornings, afternoons or both, so it's perfect to combine your volunteering with Spanish lessons in your free time, which is a nice way to improve your Spanish but also learn about the Guatemalan culture.
