Mount Meru Hospital
The history of Mt. Meru Hospital goes back to the First World War when it was initially established as a camp for treating casualties of the war. Over the years it evolved into a hospital. Mt. Meru Hospital was established in World War I as a casualty camp. Throughout the years it has become a hospital. There is a capacity of 450 beds and features many departments including pharmacy, physiotherapy, anesthesia, mental health, pathology, radiology, dentistry, ophthalmology, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, surgical, and internal medicine.
This hospital is owned in full by the government and employs 430 staff members. This hospital serves over 200 patients each day and is located in the center of Arusha. As a volunteer with this project, you will have the opportunity to hone your medical skills regardless of specification.
Ngarenaro Health Centre
With a beginning as a health centre for women, Ngarenaro Health Centre has continued on as a women’s reproductive health facility. Situated in the center of the city, the centre features 8 doctors and 40 nurses as well as facilities for a labor ward, maternity and children’s clinic, an outpatient department, and a laboratory service.
This is a very busy centre with an extremely high number of patients. Services are available 24 hours and include testing and counseling for HIV/AIDS, general maternity, family planning services, early infant diagnosis, delivery, care, treatment and counseling for HIV positive mothers, preventing mother-to-child transmission, antenatal care and pregnancy, and comprehensive breastfeeding.
Volunteers who are medical professionals (please submit your CV) or medical students are welcome. Volunteers will treat the mothers and children who visit the centre, give vaccinations to newborns, and assist nurses in the labor room. Some volunteers may assist with administration.
Themi Hospital
Established in 1994, Themi Health Centre employs 27 nurses, four clinical officers and one assistant medical officer. It features services for pregnancy and delivery, antenatal care, maternity care, family planning information, a clinic for children, a labor ward, laboratory, and an outpatient department. We also provide testing and counseling services for TB and HIV/AIDS.
