Program Details
As a volunteer on a construction program, you will help rural and semi-rural communities develop and improve their primary infrastructure like school classrooms, libraries, toilet facilities, community gardens and centers or renovate secondary infrastructure including rainwater harvesting systems, furniture, tools and equipment to improve access to clean water, sanitation, education, healthcare and meals.
This program is year-round and suitable for individuals, groups, professionals, solo travelers, gay year etc. SMWEF’s volunteer construction and renovation projects are a great way to make a meaningful difference and leave a lasting impact in rural communities in Ghana.
SMWEF’s construction and renovation volunteering projects includes a variety of different types of construction work that volunteers can get involved with tasks including brick laying, block shaping, plastering, electrical wiring, painting, mortar works, steel bending, plumbing, carpentry, fetching water, dig and set foundations, brick molding, preparing land for building, filling, installing fencing around the school and orphanage premises etc.
Volunteers participating on this program should bring gloves, flashlight and light weight scarf for sun protection or hat, insect repellent, working boots and water bottle. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to meet community elders and learn about the various cultures of different communities through drumming, music and dance.
Construction and renovation program in Ghana is a rewarding experience as volunteers will make a significant contribution and difference that you are rendering to the local communities and supporting local families and children in need and providing them with better living conditions. Volunteers will work with SMWEF staff and local workmen who provides guidance, training and assistance.
This project involves more physical and manual labor as you will be involved with different tasks.
Typical day
Volunteers will work in the morning or afternoon for a period of 4-7 hours a day.
8:00am volunteers arrive at the project site and start work on the project. Please Note: working time and everyday work depends on the project placement of volunteers.
12:00pm volunteers for a lunch break
2:30pm Work at the project usually ends for the day and volunteers are free to explore and shop at the local market, visit other important places in the community.
Free time activities
Volunteers who wish to make travel arrangements once in Ghana, our local team is always happy to provide advice and assistance. Volunteers can fill their time free time in Ghana visiting the many historical sites, beautiful beaches, dining on incredible food providers or even, as interns have the weekends free, taking a day trip to Cape Coast.
Itinerary Information and Basic Inclusions
As you land in Accra, you will be picked up by one of our team members upon arrival. Your responsible will then escort you to a taxi, where you will be brought to our volunteer accommodation. Once there, you will be provided 3 meals a day, electricity, running water, and a SIM card for data.
Evidențiere program
1. Get involved in laying bricks, doing carpentry, painting, plastering and landscaping.
2. Assist local skilled and unskilled workers who will guide you through the project.
3. Help construct and renovate rural communities such as school classrooms, libraries etc.
4. Preparing mixture of cement , sand and water.
5. Receive certificate of participation upon successfully completing your program.
