TEFL Certificates

Teaching English as a foreign language in a foreign country can be an exciting way to work abroad. However, in order to have the best opportunities, make sure to have a TEFL certificate prior to buying your plane tickets. Some schools do not require teaching certificates, but the majority do and you will most likely feel more confident about your teaching ability if you have gone through a TEFL training course.

You may also have a higher salary as a result of being certified. In addition to having a certificate, you’ll be more attractive to future employers if you have a bachelor’s degree, are over the age of 25 and have worked for at least a few years. A typical TEFL course is usually 120 hours and you can choose how fast you want to complete those hours depending on your schedule. There are more teaching opportunities in the world than there are teachers so get your TEFL certificate and enjoy your time abroad!

How to get a TEFL certificate

There are many organizations offering TEFL certificates. Check online to see who has the best reputation or ask your school if they can recommend any companies. Your new employer may also have some suggestions for you. Once you sign up, you can complete your program online or in a traditional classroom depending on which type of program you chose.

After your 120 hours of training are up, you will get a pretty certificate and be on your way!

TEFL Tips

1. Choose a reputable company. Don’t give money to just any company offering certification. Here is what you should look for in a course:

It should have at least 100 hours of instruction.
20 hours of practice teaching (yes, some online courses provide this!).
The course should be accredited or affiliated with a reputable university.
Once finished, receive job placement assistance.

2. Choose a program that fits your lifestyle. You can take classes part-time or full-time or completely online.

3. During your training, make sure to ask your teacher about specific advice for the country you are going to. Asians learn differently than Africans. Find someone at the school who has taught in the country you are going to in order to get the best training for your particular situation. Their advice will save a lot of headaches when you start teaching on your own!
