Interning abroad can be one of the best ways to start your career in a foreign country. Whether it’s an internship while you’re still in school or an internship right after you graduate, this opportunity gives you the insight you need to decide about not only your career but also this new country you’ll be living in. After starting your internship, do you like the industry you’ve chosen? Outside of work hours, do you enjoy the city you’re living in and the culture you’re experiencing? During your internship, you’ll discover a lot of answers to important life-changing questions that will shape the path you take for the rest of your life.

How to choose the best intern abroad program for you

Finding an internship on your own is possible but requires a lot of work. While you may get lucky and be able to do some interviews over the phone or web, most companies prefer to meet the people they are hiring in person. This means you need to pay your own way and then pound the pavement of a new city of strangers. A perhaps better and definitely easier alternative is to use the services of a company that matches interns with employers. Usually this type of company will also offer additional useful services such as airport pickup, accommodation, language classes, city tours, and help with any problem you may experience.

Especially for internships in Asia, connections go a long way and if you can find a company that has good connections with various employers in the city, then you’ll have a much better chance of getting your dream internship. To have the best experience, make sure you choose a country that you know you’ll enjoy. Choosing a place far away from friends and family can be very difficult for some people. Also make sure to put in the time to truly understand your new job and industry. If your budget allows, a three to six month internship programs are typically more useful than a one month internship.

Intern Abroad Tips

1. Bring enough money

Make sure to ask the company helping you with your visa and internship about how much money you should bring with you for living expenses.

2. Allow enough time

Getting a passport and visas to certain countries can take a long time. You don’t want to be stressed out about having plane tickets but no visa the day before you leave!

3. Have a plan B.

Have a good idea of the layout of the city and where you’ll be staying before you arrive. Hopefully, someone will be at the airport waiting for you. However, in case they don’t show up, make sure you know how to get to the airport to your new place (or a backup hotel nearby) just in case. Know if you should take certain transport over others and in general always prepare for the worst case scenario. It’s not fun to be in a new place without a plan B.

4. Communicate

At your new workplace, be sure to communicate with your boss about certain skills that are very valuable for you to attain. To make your internship worth it, you’ll need to let your boss know why you want this internship. There may be cultural miscommunications at times so make sure to double-check you’re always on the same page as your co-workers.

5. Don’t be a homebody

Hang out with your co-workers outside of business hours to create lasting friendships and to also help you at work. Your boss isn’t the only one who can mentor you during your internship, be friendly and meet as many people as possible during your internship.
